A cupholder and a phone are fighting for the same space
In the hatchback the place that holds a bottle is also the place a loose phone ends up.

A mount exists so the phone is not a projectile and not a passenger's problem. The cupholder exists so a bottle is not in the door where it rattles. In the hatchback those two ideas collapse into one hollow ahead of the shifter, and whichever object arrives second loses.
What we stopped doing
We stopped calling that hollow storage. On days with a bottle, the phone went into the mount, which is what the mount is for. On days without the mount fitted, the phone went into the door and slid. The door is a bad mount. It hides the screen and offers it to the footwell at the first real corner.
A cabin note from this desk will say whether the phone has a place that is not the cup. If the only stable surface is the one meant for a drink, the cabin is one object short.
