Low sun washing across a cabin screen

A map promised for later is not this week's screen

Geely said some overseas cars should get Google's cabin services, with a first one aimed at the second half of 2027. The desk has not sat in it. The screen in front of us is the one we have.

This week Geely said it plans to put Google's cabin services into some cars sold outside its home market, and named the second half of 2027 as the aim for a first one. A date on a plan is not a screen. The desk has not sat in that car, and we will not grade a cabin from a partnership note.

The screen is the one that is on

We already know what a cabin screen has to do on an ordinary day. It has to stay readable, and it has to keep the next turn visible when the clever part goes quiet. A map that lives in an account is useful until the account will not sign in, or the signal drops between two hills. The car still has to be driven. The sign at the junction does not wait for the service to wake.

A number plate you can read does not depend on an assistant that arrives next year. The driver behind is looking at the car, not at a menu that has not been installed.

The phone still needs a place

The other map is the one in a phone. If the promised service is not in the car yet, the phone is the map, and it still needs a place that is not a lap. The boot closes the same way whether a later car will speak to Google or not. We will not treat a 2027 aim as a button we can press this week.

What we will keep

We will keep the promise in the year it named. The list for the car we have stays short: a screen we can read, a phone with a place, and a drive that does not stop because a service did not answer. When a car with those services is one we can sit in, that is a different note.
