A wet day inside the car, glass beaded with rain

A floor mat that walks toward the pedal is not trim

After a wet week the hatchback's mat had crept forward until it touched the throttle pedal at rest.

Floor mats are sold as protection. A mat that moves is a control. In the hatchback the driver's mat, damp and unclipped after a clean, slid forward. At rest it kissed the pedal. Under a foot it would have been worse.

Clips are the feature

We refitted the clip, which is a small hook the mat is molded to meet. With the clip in, a week of entries and exits did not move it. Without the clip, one afternoon did. The clip is not an accessory. It is the difference between a mat and a loose board.

Any car we write about gets a look at the driver's mat before a dynamic note. If it is unclipped, stacked, or the wrong shape for the well, that is the first sentence. Pedals are not a place for soft furnishings.
