Rain on the glass during a wet drive

Standing water gets a slower entry

A flooded dip on the way back to the desk was a reason to turn around, not a chance to see what the car could cross.

Lena Voss, Editor · 22 June 2026

After a heavy hour the dip near the desk held water across the whole lane. We could not see the bottom. The hatchback would probably have walked through it. Probably is not a method.

The rule we already had

We turned around and took the longer street. The rule is old and dull: if the water covers the lower edge of the doorsill in our imagination, we do not check the imagination with the car. Depth is invisible. Drains hide. A stalled car in a dip is a worse story than a late return.

This is not a review of wading ability. It is a note that the desk does not manufacture adventure out of a flooded lane. When a piece says we drove through water, it will say we could see the surface underneath.

See a mistake? Write the desk. How a piece is tested, and what the desk will not sell, is set out in How we test and Editorial standards.
