Kestrel Arc

A compact jump pack that started our cold diesel on the second press and then sat, correctly, doing nothing.

Amira Solt, Gadgets Editor · 12 September 2026

The Kestrel Arc is a lithium jump pack with clamps, a charge port, and a row of lights that tell you the state of the pack without a phone. That last part matters. A tool you need on a dark morning should not ask you to sign in.

The cold morning

We left the desk wagon, a diesel, parked outside overnight after a short trip that had not fully warmed it. In the morning it turned and did not catch. The Arc's clamps are stiff, which we liked: they bit the posts and stayed. The first press of the trigger gave a determined crank and no start. The second press caught. We did not count the first press as a failure of the pack so much as a reminder that a diesel which has sat is a harder job than the petrol figure printed on a box.

The printed card leans on petrol engines and a large cubic capacity. Our diesel started, but the card would have served the buyer better if it had said less. That is why "honest about its limits" is an 8.0 rather than a 9.

Two weeks of not using it

A jump pack's second test is neglect. We charged it, put it in the footwell, and left it. Two weeks later the lights showed the same band. The case is bulky for a glovebox in the hatchback and fine in the wagon. The flashlight is a small LED that will find a post and will not replace a torch. We are glad it is there and we did not score the product as a light.

There is no app. The lights are the interface. That is the right interface.

Why it is not the award

On the weighted checks the Arc lands at 8.7. It is excellent at a job you hope not to do. Best Car Gadget 2026 went to the DashNova V4, a screen adapter, on a published spec comparison. Different job. If your worry is a cold morning rather than a car screen, buy the Arc and ignore the award name.
